PHILADELPHIA — Brandon Graham, the two-time Super Bowl champion defensive end, has retired from the NFL for the second time, ending a 16-season career whose final act was, in the sequence, a retirement, a return, and now a retirement that is the second one.

Graham, 38, confirmed to The Athletic on Tuesday that the retirement is official. He had retired in March of 2025. He had come back the following October to play the 2026 season. He has now retired again. That is the sequence. That is the whole of it.

"He retired. He came back. He retired again. That is not a career. That is a schedule."

The Eagles, who have fielded Graham since he was a 21-year-old out of Michigan State, have not issued a statement yet. That is the standard response of a team still figuring out what the second retirement is — and it is the part the locker room is not ready for, in the way locker rooms are not ready for things that have already happened once.

The 16 seasons are the number. The two Super Bowls are the other number. The fact that he played a full season in between the two retirements is the number that is the thing, and the one the players’ association has not addressed, because the players’ association has not addressed a lot of things this season.

  • 2011: Graham is drafted by the Eagles. He is 21. He is good.
  • 2017, 2022: Two Super Bowl rings. The number is two.
  • March 2025: Graham retires. The number is one retirement.
  • October 2025: Graham returns for the 2026 season. The number is one retirement, minus one.
  • Tuesday: Graham retires. The number is two. The number is the thing.

The Eagles have not said what they are going to do with the locker. That is the part that is going to be the thing, and the part no one is going to get wrong this time, because last time they did. They put the first “retired” sign up. It came down. They are now, reportedly, measuring the wall for a second sign, which is, in the franchise’s history, a first, and which is, in the specific, the part of the season that everyone is waiting to hear about.

At press time, Graham was retired, the jersey was still on the hook, and the locker room was quiet in the specific way locker rooms get quiet when the second sign is taped up.
