Census Bureau Says 24,000 Noncitizens Voted in 2020; President: 'I WON THE ELECTION!'

WASHINGTON — The United States Census Bureau, the federal agency whose entire reason for existing is to count things, announced on Tuesday that it has begun cross-checking 2020 voter records against citizenship records and has already found that more than 24,000 noncitizens voted illegally in the last presidential election. The president’s response, delivered in the only register the situation allows, was a single line: “I WON THE ELECTION!”

The claim appeared in a post on the president’s Truth Social account, which read, in part: “The Census Bureau has begun cross-checking 2020 voter records against citizenship records. Out of the first 128,000,000 voters, the Census Bureau has proven that over 24,000 non-citizens voted illegally! The Census Bureau will analyze the next 32,000,000 voters, and this number will explode…” before concluding, in the capitalization of a man who has finally found the word he has been waiting six years for, “I WON THE ELECTION!”

The White House, for its part, published a government graphic that is best described as a scoreboard. It shows 160 million ballots cast in 2020. It shows 128 million voter records that were “linked to” U.S. citizens. It shows more than 24,000 records that were “linked to” noncitizens. And it shows 32 million records still waiting their turn, like the back of a DMV line, except the DMV line is the legitimacy of the American government. The graphic carries an approval number — CBDRB-FY26-0285, from the Census Bureau’s Disclosure Review Board — which is the kind of detail that appears on things that have been checked by people whose job is checking.

Let us sit with the word “linked,” because the word is doing a lot of lifting. The government’s own graphic does not say 24,000 noncitizens voted. It says 24,000 voter records are “linked to” noncitizens. Linked. That is the word the Census Bureau uses for the thing that settled the election.

The method, as described in coverage of the release, is what the industry would call a data join and what everyone else would call a hunch with a spreadsheet: a voter record that cannot be matched to a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or passport is flagged, and then checked against immigration indicators — green cards, visas, foreign-student status, DACA, enforcement records. No methodology document accompanied the graphic. No error rate was provided. No state-by-state breakdown was provided. No case-level verification was provided. What was provided was a number, a flag, and an approval number, which is roughly the federal government’s version of a restaurant handing you the check before the food arrives.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who appears to have a personal interest in the count being high, told a crowd that the Census Bureau “just released an analysis showing that over 24,000 non-citizens illegally voted in the 2020 election,” and that 32 million more records are in the queue, which is the part of the post that reads like a menu: the number will grow, the number is coming, please enjoy your meal.

The country-of-birth breakdown, as it exists, is a small census of its own: 3,800 records attributed to Mexico, 950 to Canada, 900 each to the Philippines and Jamaica, 700 to Germany, 650 to the United Kingdom, 450 to Cuba, and 350 to South Korea — a number that may or may not be the largest single-country count on the list, and which, if it is, makes for a remarkable coincidence, given that this is the same week the president cut military drills with that country.

For context, the Census Bureau is the same institution that has spent the better part of a decade apologizing for undercounts, sampling margins, and the general difficulty of counting Americans, and whose own May presentation, to the extent it exists, concerned the quality of commercial voter files — which is to say, the data that political consultants buy — rather than the official rolls on which elections are run. The agency that could not find everyone at Thanksgiving has apparently found the election.

Congress, which the president said must now “pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” has so far responded with the thing Congress does when handed a 24,000-line item with no math attached, which is to form a committee to study whether a committee should be formed.

At press time, the Census Bureau had not responded to requests for the methodology, the error rate, or the definition of “linked,” and the next 32 million records were scheduled for review “soon,” which is the government’s word for whenever the number does what the number does.
