WASHINGTON — The guest list for President Donald Trump’s September 24 state dinner for Chinese leader Xi Jinping was confirmed Friday, and it reads less like a diplomatic reception than a shareholder meeting that someone forgot to send a calendar invite to. The expected attendees include Apple’s Tim Cook, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, Tesla’s Elon Musk, Dell’s Michael Dell, JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon, and Citigroup’s Jane Fraser. In other words, the dinner is not a menu. It is a sector rotation.

The meal will be served Thursday in the State Dining Room — a long table, a flag at each end, and a sideboard of name plates so crowded that one source described the seating chart as “a Nasdaq composite with a china cloth.” The White House has not released the table map, which is itself a data point. The list is the story. The table is the reveal.

"The guest list is the trade. The trade is the dinner. The dinner is the trade."

The composition of the list has drawn what can only be described as considered attention — the kind of attention the market pays to a single number when that number happens to be the country’s entire relationship with the second-largest economy on Earth. The dinner is, in the words of one strategist, “the single most concentrated expression of U.S.-China economic interdependence that has ever been put on a table.” That is not a small table. That is a table with a flag at each end and a guest list that, if you squint, is just the S&P 500 with a place setting.

The inclusion of the tech titans alongside the banking chiefs has been read two ways. The first reading is that the administration is, in fact, trying to do a deal. The second reading is that it is trying to do a dinnera room full of the richest people in the country sitting across from the richest man in the world, all of them eating the same meal. The two readings are not the same thing, which is the entire point. The market chose the first reading. That is what markets do. They choose the reading that makes the stock go up, and then they call the reading “the trade.”

THE DINNER, AT A GLANCE

  • Date: Thursday, September 24
  • Host: The White House
  • Guest of honor: The President of the People's Republic of China
  • Confirmed tech: Apple, OpenAI, Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, Tesla, Dell
  • Confirmed finance: JPMorgan, Citigroup
  • Market's read: "the list is the trade"
  • Market's other read: "the list is the dinner"

One of the more enduring features of the guest list is that it includes, by count, more people who are the reason the stock market is where it is than there are, in fact, chairs at the table — a logistical fact the White House has, in the words of one source, “been addressing.” The table is not long enough. The table has never been long enough. The table is, in the words of the person who set the table, “a table that has been, until now, a trade.” The fact that the table has been a trade is the fact the market priced in before the invitations went out, which is to say the market decided the dinner before the dinner was decided.

The menu, which has not been announced, is, in the words of one person who has in fact been to a state dinner, “a long meal, with a lot of people, who are, individually, the reason the stock market is where it is, all sitting in one room.” The menu is the meal. The meal is the market. And the market has, as is its way, already decided.

At press time, the invitations had not been sent, the table had not been set, and the market had, as is its way, already decided. The dinner, in other words, is the event. The food is the meal. And the stock is the dinner.
