Microsoft Consolidates Four AI Products Into One App and the Stock Soars

REDMOND, Wash. — Microsoft on Friday announced that it has consolidated four separate artificial-intelligence products — Copilot, Copilot Code, Copilot Autopilot, and a fourth product that a company spokesperson described as “also Copilot” — into a single application, and the stock responded the way a stock responds to news that has taken a long time to arrive.

Shares rose more than 4 percent to close at $516.17, capping a year in which Microsoft has, per one market report on the overhaul, “ridden the soaring prices from the global memory shortage to year-to-date gains of nearly 280 percent.” The consolidation, which a company executive described at a 7:45 a.m. briefing as “unification,” merges the chatbot, the coding assistant, and the always-on agent platform into a single app, per Cryptonomist’s recap.

“Customers were confused,” the executive said, without specifying which customers or what they had been confused about. “Now they are not confused. They have one Copilot. One.”

The product the company is now selling, per its own materials, can write code, run that code, schedule meetings, and, in a feature the company described as “the headline item,” continue working after a user has closed the laptop. The feature, which the company calls “Autopilot,” does not require the user to be present, to be logged in, or, per one internal presentation that was not released, to be “enthusiastic.”

Analysts have been characterizing the move as “long overdue,” a phrase that appeared in eight of the nine analyst notes published Friday morning. The ninth note, from a firm that does not cover Microsoft, described the move as “what they should have done in 2024” and then recommended “hold.”

The consolidation is the latest entry in a company-wide effort to reduce the number of things a customer must remember the name of. Microsoft now sells, per a company intranet post that was not linked but was described as “comprehensive,” 4,211 products. The intranet post, which is 11 pages long, has a search bar. The search bar, per the post, “does not work on all 4,211 products but does work on 3,998 of them.”

A Microsoft spokesperson, asked whether the fourth product was “really also Copilot,” responded: “Yes.” Asked what it did, the spokesperson responded: “It did Copilot things.” Asked whether customers would be able to tell the difference, the spokesperson responded: “No, and that is the point.”

At press time, the stock was flat. The intranet search bar had been updated to work on 4,012 of the 4,211 products. The 199 it does not work on have not been made public. The company has said it is “working on it.”
